Ron Wilson, CEO Quoted in Detroit News

December 22, 2012 “Detroit Metro hotel occupancy rate in November unchanged from last year.”

Metro Detroit’s hotel occupancy in November failed to increase for the first  time since October 2009, but a hotel analyst said the flat result isn’t a cause  for concern.

November’s 59.8 percent occupancy rate was unchanged from the same time a year ago, according to STR, a Hendersonville,  Tenn.-based hotel information company. It marked the first time the Detroit  region didn’t eke out a monthly year-over-year gain in three years — back when  the economy was in the depths of the recession…

…”Detroit will likely finish up 2012 with a 61-62 percent occupancy rate,  besting both the 2009 recession occupancy rate of 48 percent and the  pre-recession high of 58 percent,” said Ron Wilson, CEO of Troy-based Hotel Investment Services Inc., a consulting firm that also owns hotels in Metro Detroit.

Next year, Wilson expects hotel revenue in the Detroit region to increase 2  to 3 percent. But he is more cautious about how many more rooms the industry  will fill, estimating anywhere from no growth to a 3 percent rise in  occupancy.

Metro Hotel Occupancy Rate hits 70%

Saturday, September 29, 2012 – Ron Wilson, CEO was featured in the Detroit News, Business Section article, “Metro hotel occupancy rate hits 70%, the highest since ’00″

Metro Detroit’s hotel industry cashed in on a hot, sunny summer by filling more rooms than it has in a decade and charging more for the privilege.

The region’s hotel occupancy rate hit 70 percent in August, the highest rate since 71.4 percent in August 2000 — the end of the dot.com technology boom, according to STR, a Hendersonville, Tenn.-based hotel industry information company. The occupancy rate increased 2.3 percent from a year ago.

August’s growth followed Detroit area occupancy rates of 68.7 percent in July and 70.4 percent in June that also were up from a year ago.

Occupancy rates of 70 percent or higher usually produce profits, experts say.

“We have 15 hotels in our portfolio, and we are seeing the same thing both in Southeast Michigan and throughout the state,” said Ron Wilson, CEO of Troy-based Hotel Investment Services Inc. and an industry consultant, in an email. HIS manages 11 hotels in Michigan.
