Saturday, September 29, 2012 – Ron Wilson, CEO was featured in the Detroit News, Business Section article, “Metro hotel occupancy rate hits 70%, the highest since ’00″
Metro Detroit’s hotel industry cashed in on a hot, sunny summer by filling more rooms than it has in a decade and charging more for the privilege.
The region’s hotel occupancy rate hit 70 percent in August, the highest rate since 71.4 percent in August 2000 — the end of the dot.com technology boom, according to STR, a Hendersonville, Tenn.-based hotel industry information company. The occupancy rate increased 2.3 percent from a year ago.
August’s growth followed Detroit area occupancy rates of 68.7 percent in July and 70.4 percent in June that also were up from a year ago.
Occupancy rates of 70 percent or higher usually produce profits, experts say.
“We have 15 hotels in our portfolio, and we are seeing the same thing both in Southeast Michigan and throughout the state,” said Ron Wilson, CEO of Troy-based Hotel Investment Services Inc. and an industry consultant, in an email. HIS manages 11 hotels in Michigan.
